Historical treasure found near Tomaszów Lubelski

A historical banner from before World War II was unearthed near Tomaszów Lubelski. “The banner, most likely due to the place where it was buried and the high quality of the material from which it was made (including gold and silver threads), is the best-preserved banner excavated from an earth deposit,” reported the Museum of the 4th Podhale Rifle Regiment.

The discovery was made on May 2 near Tomaszów Lubelski, in the area of the last battles of the unit from Cieszyn in September 1939. In the same place, the day before, the award pennant of the 21st Mountain Infantry Division and sashes from the regimental banner were also found.

The banner was funded in 1924 by the community of the Cieszyn region, led by Father Sznurowacki. The embroidery was commissioned from the Felician Sisters of the now defunct convent in Czechowice-Dziedzice. Despite intensive searches, the silver eagle from the banner pole was not found on site (it is probably still buried nearby).

The find was handed over to the Regional Museum in Tomaszów Lubelski and is to be preserved at the Polish Army Museum.
