Artificial Intelligence Brings History to Life

The author of the Instagram profile Sztuczna Polska used artificial intelligence to refresh several photos from the Warsaw Uprising. AI was employed to digitally “restore” original photographs from 1944. Jacek Jabłoński created realistic new versions of these images from the Warsaw Uprising, visually updating them to resemble the aesthetic of contemporary smartphone photography.

The effect is striking — historic frames from the uprising era gain a new dimension. While maintaining authenticity, their modern form invites reflection on the enduring relevance of themes like war, resistance, and sacrifice.

This initiative attracted significant interest from internet users and sparked a discussion about the possibilities, as well as the responsibilities, involved in using artificial intelligence to work with archival materials.
