Dr. hab. Marek Więckowski elected Vice President of the International Geographical Union

Marek Więckowski, Ph.D., professor at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the Polish Academy of Sciences, has been elected vice-president of the International Geographical Union (MUG). 

During the 35th International Geographical Congress, held August 24-30, 2024, in Dublin under the motto “Celebrating a world of difference,” new authorities of the organization were elected. Professor Nathalie Lemarchand of France was elected president of MUG. Among the nine candidates – from countries such as Brazil, India, Japan, Poland, the United States, Switzerland, Sweden, Uganda and the United Kingdom – the following scientists were elected vice-presidents: dr. Marek Więckowski (Poland), Anindita Datta (India), Holly R. Barcus (United States). 

This is a significant honor for Polish geography, which emphasizes the growing role of Poland on the international scientific scene. Marek Więckowski, PhD, is the author of many scientific publications and has shared his knowledge and experience participating in numerous national and international conferences. He is a member of the Polish Geographical Society. 

The International Geographical Congress, organized every 3-4 years by the International Geographical Union (MUG), is one of the most important events in the field of geography. The first edition of the congress took place in 1871 in Antwerp.
