Elderberry juice supports weight loss

Elderberries, prized for their medicinal properties, may be effective in the fight against excess weight and metabolic problems, reports the journal “Nutrients”. A study conducted by a team from Washington State University has shown new benefits of daily consumption of elderberry juice.

Researchers tested the effects of elderberry on metabolic health in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 18 overweight adults. Participants consumed elderberry juice or a placebo of similar color and flavor, specially formulated by North Carolina State University’s Food Innovation Laboratory, while following a standardized diet.

Drinking 340 ml of elderberry juice daily for a week resulted in positive changes in the gut microbiome, but also improved glucose tolerance and increased fat oxidation, according to the clinical study.

The study authors have applied for a provisional patent for the use of elderberry’s bioactive components for weight management and gut health through supplements or other applications.
