Polish secondary school students achieved a remarkable success at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held on Australia’s Sunshine Coast. The Polish team tied with Japan for fourth place in the team standings, marking their best result since 1973.
This prestigious international event drew 630 participants from 110 countries this year, including 69 girls. The Polish team brought home a total of six medals: three gold and three silver. The gold medalists — Stanisław Lada, Magdalena Pudełko, and Jakub Świcarz — each earned an impressive 35 out of a possible 42 points. Silver medals were awarded to Mateusz Wawrzyniak (31 points), Michał Wolny, and Antoni Mazur (30 points each).
The Polish team was supervised by Dr. Dominik Burek and Dr. Tomasz Cieśla, whose expert guidance and dedication contributed significantly to this outstanding achievement.
China claimed the top spot in the overall standings, followed by the United States and South Korea. Poland and Japan jointly completed the top four, joining the ranks of the world’s elite in mathematical problem solving.
The International Mathematical Olympiad is the oldest and most prestigious mathematics competition for secondary school students. Its history dates back to 1959, when the first edition was held in Romania with seven countries participating. Poland has taken part in the competition continuously since its inception, having earned a total of 37 gold, 101 silver, and 144 bronze medals.
The next, 67th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad will be held in 2026 in Shanghai.
