May 22 is celebrated around the world as the International Day for Biological Diversity, established by the UN General Assembly to remind us of the importance of protecting life on Earth in all its forms. This year’s theme, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” highlights the close link between preserving biodiversity and achieving global sustainable development goals.
Biodiversity is not only the richness of species, but also genetic and ecosystem diversity, which are the basis for climate stability, public health, and food security. Unfortunately, these resources are now under threat as never before. That is why the international community has set itself a clear goal: to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
In Poland, activities for the protection of nature and the restoration of natural resources are coordinated, among others, by the Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute (IOŚ-PIB), which is preparing a national plan for the restoration of natural resources on behalf of the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
IOŚ-PIB experts remind us that each of us can have an impact on the state of local ecosystems. Simple actions, such as planting flower meadows, limiting the use of chemicals in gardens, or avoiding agricultural monocultures, can really support pollinator populations and other organisms essential to environmental health.
IOŚ-PIB encourages active participation in nature conservation activities. Each of us can contribute to the preservation of biodiversity through conscious consumer choices, support for local environmental initiatives, and environmental education.
