March 9 is Polish Statistics Day, a holiday established in 2008 by the Polish Statistical Association, the Committee on Statistics and Econometrics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the President of the Central Statistical Office. This date commemorates the events of March 9, 1789, when, during the deliberations of the Four-Year Sejm, economist and reformer Fryderyk Józef Moszyński presented arguments for conducting a statistical census in Polish lands. As a result, a decision was made to conduct the first universal census in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, known as the “Lustracja dymów i podanie ludności” (Smoke Inspection and Population Census).
The celebrations of this day are aimed at promoting and popularizing statistics as a science and emphasizing the importance of public statistics in social and economic life. Thanks to the work of statisticians, it is possible to reliably describe demographic, social, and economic phenomena, as well as make data-driven decisions. Public statistics fulfill an important mission of providing the public and state institutions with reliable information on the state of and changes in the economy and social life.
From an academic perspective, statistics remain one of the key tools of modern science – in economics, finance, and many other fields of research. That is why the development of methods of data analysis, econometrics, and statistical research is an important part of the university’s scientific activity.
