The Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS), a unit of the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), has launched an innovative five-year scientific project—PSNC Energy Lab—aimed at supporting the energy transition of Eastern Greater Poland.

The region, which for decades relied on coal mining and combustion, is preparing to completely phase out coal by 2026. These new initiatives are designed to help achieve climate neutrality by 2040.

As part of PSNC Energy Lab, three complementary components will be created: the Digital Twins Laboratory, the Renewable Energy Laboratory (OZE), and the Living Laboratory.

The Digital Twins Laboratory will enable the creation of digital models of buildings and sites in the region, allowing simulations of various energy scenarios. These models will make it possible to optimize energy consumption, analyze the environmental impact of specific actions, plan energy production based on weather forecasts, and study methods for reducing smog.

The second pillar of the project is the Renewable Energy Laboratory, located in Górki near Kłodawa. It will feature an experimental photovoltaic and wind farm, an energy storage facility, and a node of the national PIONIER broadband network. The goal is to develop an efficient energy mix model that aligns energy production with local needs and storage capabilities.

The third component of PSNC Energy Lab is the Living Laboratory, which will focus on educational and community activities. This part of the project will deliver programs on renewable energy, digitalization, and green transformation. A key principle is the open access to research results and ensuring that local communities have access to data and analytical tools, so the transition process is conducted consciously and based on solid scientific foundations.

The PSNC Energy Lab budget amounts to 35 million PLN: 70% from the European Union’s Just Transition Fund, 20% from the national budget, and 10% from PCSS’s own funds. The project will be implemented over five years.
