Poland’s IGNIS technology and science mission will launch on May 29

On May 29, 2025, the second Pole in history will fly into space. Axiom Space has announced the launch date of the Ax-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS). One of the crew members is Dr. Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, who will conduct on the ISS a number of experiments important to Polish science and space industry.

Axiom Space announced that the launch is scheduled for May 29, 2025, at 7:03 pm CEST (1:03 pm EDT). The Falcon 9 rocket with a manned Dragon capsule will launch from the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United States.

The four-member Ax-4 crew includes Polish European Space Agency project astronaut Dr. Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski. He will be the second Pole in history to fly into space and the first to spend time aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

As part of the IGNIS mission, the Pole will conduct 13 experiments developed by Polish companies and universities. The scope of research will be broad and will encompass astronaut health, microbiome, new materials and technologies, including the use of artificial intelligence.

One of the experiments to be conducted on the International Space Station will be an experiment with algae, developed at the University of Warsaw. The project, called “Space Volcanic Algae,” concerns so-called extremophilic (living in extreme conditions) microalgae, which on Earth live near volcanoes. Scientists will test how microgravity affects microorganisms
