Four medals: two gold and two silver, and the title of world vice-champion in programming were won by the Polish team at the 36th International Olympiad in Informatics, held in Alexandria, Egypt, September 1-8, 2024. The competition was attended by 362 participants from 91 countries.
The Polish national team consisted of four members who took the highest places in the national IT Olympiad in the 2023/2024 school year. These were two graduates of the 14th Stanislaw Staszic High School in Warsaw: Jan Gwiazda and Kajetan Ramsza, a graduate of the 14th Polish-Belgian High School in Wroclaw, Rafal Manczyk, and a student of the 14th Stanislaw Staszic High School in Warsaw, Adam Gąsienica-Samek.
The team supervisors were Dr. Pawel Gawrychowski and Krzysztof Boryczka of the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Wrocław.
Results of the Polish national team
The Olympiad ended with an excellent result for the Polish team. Adam Gąsienica-Samek took second place in the world and won the gold medal of the competition. The Pole was outperformed only by a competitor from China. Rafal Mańczyk also won a gold medal taking 19th place in the ranking, and Kajetan Ramsza and Jan Gwiazda won silver medals, placing just behind the gold podium in 32nd and 34th places, respectively.

In the unofficial medal classification, Poland took a joint 3rd place together with Japan; the first two places were taken by the USA and Israel.

International Olympiad in Informatics
The International Olympiad in Informatics is the most prestigious computer science competition for students around the world. The event is held annually. This year’s edition of the Olympiad was held from September 1 to 8, 2024. The event was hosted by Egypt.
In the 36 editions of the International Olympiad in Informatics held so far, Polish students have won a total of 44 gold medals, 52 silver medals and 35 bronze medals, placing Poland fifth in the all-time standings after China, Russia, the United States and South Korea. Competitors from Poland have triumphed twice in these competitions; they were Filip Wolski in 2006 and Tomasz Kulczyński in 2007.
