To mark the Day Against Discrimination of People with Disabilities on May 5, the Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School is summarizing the activities carried out so far as part of the “Accessible Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School” project. This comprehensive initiative, carried out in partnership with the “L” Foundation, aims to build a system of accessibility at the university and ensure equal opportunities in access to education and academic life.
Accessibility as a Process
The project encompasses a wide range of activities—from analyzing the university’s accessibility, through staff training, to developing support for students and staff with special needs. The first results of the implemented solutions are already visible today.
One of the key steps was the launch of an accessibility office. The university has guaranteed the availability of a career counselor and a psychological support counselor, accessible to students, doctoral candidates, and staff with disabilities at SGMK.
University staff are actively involved in initiatives for people with disabilities—including as volunteers in the activities of the Szerpowie Nadziei Foundation, supporting participants in conquering mountain peaks. SGMK also participates in inclusive events, such as two editions of the Orlen Paralympic Run, promoting the idea of accessibility and equality in practice

Technologies Supporting Accessibility
One of the most innovative outcomes of the project is the launch of the SGMK Navi mobile app, which assists with navigation within the university’s buildings. The system offers indoor navigation tailored to the needs of people with various types of disabilities—mobility, visual, or hearing impairments—as well as international students.
The app allows users to, among other things, plan personalized routes, use voice and visual prompts, and customize the interface to their individual needs.

Digital accessibility and collaboration with the community
In April 2026, consultations were held regarding the university’s website, with the participation of representatives from non-governmental organizations. The meeting allowed for an assessment of the implemented solutions compliant with the WCAG 2.1 standard and the development of recommendations for further monitoring of the website’s accessibility.
SGMK also actively participates in public and community discourse. University representatives attend conferences and events focused on accessibility policy and the role of European Funds in improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. The university was also a partner in a nationwide academic conference on contemporary challenges related to disability, supporting the development of interdisciplinary discussion and inter-institutional cooperation.

Toward a university accessible to all
The “Accessible Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School” project is a long-term process aimed not only at eliminating barriers but also at building a culture of openness and inclusion.
The Day Against Discrimination of People with Disabilities serves as an important reminder that accessibility is not a one-time effort, but an ongoing commitment. SGMK consistently pursues this vision by creating an academic environment that is welcoming and accessible to everyone.
