Shared Viking past: Danish-Polish research project

The Salling and Aarhus University Research Foundations are jointly supporting the Danish-Polish archaeological cooperation in Wolin (West Pomeranian Voivodeship), a Viking-era city mentioned in the sagas as Jomsborg. Between 2025 and 2027, scientists from Aarhus and Wolin will conduct major excavations there.

Scientists from Aarhus and Wolin will conduct major excavations at Wolin’s Viking-era harbor in 2025-2027, studying the shared heritage of Danish and Polish history.

In connection with King Frederick X’s visit to Poland in January 2024, Aarhus University (AU) and the Moesgaard Museum have entered into an agreement with the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IAE PAN), the Wolin Municipality and the Wolin-Jomsborg-Vineta Slavic and Viking Center Association to cooperate on archaeological research focused on Wolin. The agreement aims to strengthen cultural relations between Poland and Denmark and to explore the common roots of Aarhus and the largest Viking Age city in Poland. Like Aarhus, Wolin was one of the largest trading ports on the Baltic Sea in the 9th-12th centuries and played a key role in northern Europe during this period.
