Success of Polish Students at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Polish team won four medals at the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), which concluded in India. They claimed one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal, confirming Poland’s strong standing in the global competition among young astronomy enthusiasts.

The biggest success was achieved by Dawid Chudzik from Warsaw, who won the gold medal. This marks another milestone in his impressive career—last year in Brazil he took silver, while this year’s result is his best individual achievement to date. The podium also included Jasmina Nurović from Szczecin and Artur Ziółkowski from Bydgoszcz (silver medals), as well as Kinga Wysocka from Gdynia (bronze medal).

The Polish team was completed by Antoni Gazda from Dukla, with supervision provided by Waldemar Ogłoza and Grzegorz Kondrat.

The IOAA is the world’s most important competition in this field, where participants face theoretical problems, data analysis, and night-sky observations. This year’s edition, held in Mumbai, brought together 300 competitors from over 60 countries. Poland has been involved in this prestigious initiative since its inception and is among the founding countries of the IOAA. Moreover, it has twice hosted the Olympiad—in the Silesian Voivodeship.
