Polish students stood on the podium of the 20th International Geography Olympiad and the European Junior IT Olympiad.
Poles with 3 medals of the XX International Geography Olympiad in Ireland
Poles won 2 silver and 1 bronze medals at the XX International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) in Ireland, demonstrating the level attained by Polish young geographers. The competition, held August 19-24, attracted 183 competitors from 46 countries.
The International Geographical Olympiad, organized by the International Geographical Union, is an annual competition for the best high school students. In this year’s edition, participants competed in written tests, field activities and multimedia quizzes, covering topics such as the degradation of the Amazon forest, plastic pollution of the oceans, monsoon weather phenomena in Dubai and the impact of major events on cities in the context of sustainable development.
Silver medals were won by Jacek Jędraszko of the 2nd High School in Warsaw and Eryk Bednarczuk of the XXVII High School in Warsaw. The bronze medal was won by Jakub Cieślik from the III High School in Katowice. Another member of the Polish team who nearly took home the bronze medal, was Karol Kurzynoga from the 1st High School in Łódź.
A detailed account of the competition is available on the FB page of the Geography Olympiad. The next, XXI edition of iGeo will be held in 2025 in Thailand. The Polish team will be selected from among the best participants of the 51st Geographical Olympiad, organized by the Polish Geographical Society.

The youngest computer scientists with medals at the European Junior Olympiad in Informatics
Also in August, the European Junior Informatics Olympiad (EJOI) was held. During the EJOI in Moldova, Polish young computer scientists won 4 medals (1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze).
The gold medal was won by Piotr Dybich, a graduate of the 1st White Eagle Elementary School in Strzyżów, who took 2nd place overall, becoming European vice-champion. Silver medals were won by Artur Smoleński and Krzysztof Witkowski, 7th grade students of Elementary School No. 221 in Warsaw. The bronze medal went to Michał Roguz, a graduate of the Łódź Olympians Elementary School No. 79 in Łódź.
