As part of the project “Suicidology – state of knowledge analysis and educational campaign” implemented by the Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School, a specialized workshop for teachers was held in Nakło nad Notecią on the topic of mental health of children and adolescents and prevention of suicidal behavior.
The event was organized for the teaching staff of elementary and secondary schools and aimed at improving teachers’ competence in recognizing the signals of mental crisis among students and taking effective supportive measures in the school environment.
The workshop program included, among other things, identification of risk factors and warning signs, basics of crisis intervention at school, as well as building a safe relationship with a student in distress.
The classes were interactive in nature. Participants learned tools for conducting a supportive conversation, as well as the current procedures for responding in cases of suspected threats to a child’s life or mental health. Great emphasis was placed on exchanging experiences and creating a space to share the challenges that teachers face in their daily educational work.
Special attention was paid to cooperation between the school and support institutions – psychological and pedagogical counseling centers, mental health centers and social services.
