World Mental Health Day – the SGMK’s “Suicydology” project supports mental health prevention

October 10 is World Mental Health Day, dedicated to reflecting on the importance of mental health for quality of life and social functioning.

Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School is actively involved in activities to protect mental health through the implementation of the research and education project “Suicidology – analysis of the state of knowledge and educational campaign” co-financed by the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

The project aims to deepen knowledge about the phenomenon of suicidal behavior in Poland, disseminate reliable information to the public, and support the development of effective prevention strategies. Its interdisciplinary nature combines sociological, psychological, educational, and health perspectives, and utilizes social research and institutional analysis tools.

SGMK suicide report

One of the key results of the project is a report summarizing the research team’s work to date, which is a comprehensive study on suicidology in Poland. The document includes, among other things, a diagnosis of the current state of suicidological knowledge in the country, identification of research gaps and areas requiring urgent action, recommendations for preventive and educational measures, and an analysis of social attitudes toward mental health crises.

Experts from the “Suicydologia” project also conduct free suicide prevention training for teachers, educators, and specialists working with young people.
The classes are conducted by experienced trainers, combining current scientific knowledge with practical tools for recognizing and responding to crisis situations.

SGMK has also launched the educational portal suicydologia.sgmk.edu.pl, which provides reliable information, educational materials, and support for people in crisis.

SGMK podcast “Jestem tu, jeszcze” (I’m still here)

In addition, the SGMK team has created a podcast called “Jestem tu, jeszcze” (I’m still here), in which we talk about mental health, supporting people in crisis, and mental health crisis prevention. The podcast “Jestem tu, jeszcze” is available on the SGMK website and the University’s profiles on popular social media.

All episodes of the podcast can be found on a dedicated YouTube or Spotify playlist.

Remember – you are not alone. People experiencing a crisis can contact the emergency number 112 or the 24-hour helpline 800 702 222. More contacts for specialists and support institutions can be found at suicydologia.sgmk.edu.pl/pomoc.

The activities carried out by SGMK are part of initiatives undertaken to protect mental health, emphasizing the importance of scientific research and education in preventing crises and supporting those in need of help.

World Mental Health Day was established by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) and is supported by the World Health Organization.

It is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of mental health for quality of life and social functioning, as well as to promote prevention and counteract the stigmatization of people facing crises.

“Suicidology” project – a multi-phase educational and research campaign

Since 2024, Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School has been implementing the project “Suicidology – state of knowledge analysis and educational campaign” funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The project aims to raise awareness of the problem of suicide and prepare a wide-ranging educational campaign. The initiative involves research at various levels of society, including educational, professional and medical communities. The collected data will be used to create personalized prevention strategies aimed at supporting people in crisis, as well as preventing critical situations.

The project is funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. You can follow the progress of the work on the project’s dedicated website: www.sgmk.edu.pl/suicidology, where we publish updates on a regular basis. The site also includes an interactive map of workshops conducted under the project.
