We are pleased to announce that Dr. Marcin Zarzecki, an expert collaborating with the advisory team at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Warsaw, is the author of an article titled “Culture as a Source of Suicidological Acts in Youth Communities from the Perspective of Roy Bhaskar’s Critical Realism,” which has been published in a specialized academic journal.
The publication is theoretical and analytical in nature and is grounded in the paradigm of critical realism developed by Roy Bhaskar. In it, the author addresses the issue of suicidal behavior among youth, proposing an interpretation of such behavior not as purely individual or psychological phenomena, but as the effects of complex cultural, structural, and relational mechanisms.
The article draws on suicidological research conducted at SGMK and aligns with the contemporary trend of realistic sociology. In this framework, social reality is layered, and observable phenomena—such as suicidal acts—are the result of deeper, often invisible structures and mechanisms.
From the perspective of suicidological research, this publication is of particular significance because:
- it shifts the focus of analysis from the level of individual pathology to cultural and social determinants,
- it highlights the role of norms, symbols, and cultural patterns in shaping escapist attitudes,
- it aligns with the interdisciplinary trend of research combining sociology, psychology, and cultural studies.
This approach is consistent with the prevailing research trends in the global literature, which emphasize that suicidal behavior results from the interaction of individual and structural factors—ranging from classical sociological perspectives to contemporary socio-ecological models.
The article was published in the Polish Journal of Critical Realism, a journal operating under the auspices of the International Association of Critical Realism—an international academic community dedicated to developing and promoting the critical realism approach.
